Singapore’s tourism industry saw a significant boost in revenue last year, breaking its previous record set in 2018. According to data released by the Singapore Tourism Board (STB), the city-state generated a total of S$27.7 billion in tourism revenue in 2019, a 3.3% increase from the previous year. This growth can be attributed to a rise in visitor arrivals and tourist spending, with international visitors spending an average of S$1,444 per trip, a 2% increase from 2018. The increase in tourism revenue also led to a 4.8% growth in the overall contribution of tourism to Singapore’s gross domestic product (GDP).
Singapore has been ramping up its efforts to attract more tourists in recent years, with initiatives such as the Singapore Tourism Master Plan 2019-2023, which focuses on sustainable growth and enhancing visitor experiences. The city-state has also seen growth in niche tourism sectors, such as medical tourism and business events, contributing to its overall tourism growth. With the upcoming development of new attractions, such as the highly anticipated Jewel Changi Airport, and the continued efforts in promoting Singapore as a top destination for travelers, the country’s tourism industry is expected to continue thriving in the years to come.
